When the current in the circuit exceeds the fuse's nominal value for a sufficient period, the metal filament inside the fuse heats up due to the Joule effect and eventually melts, interrupting the flow of electrical current.

Once the fuse blows and the filament melts, it needs to be replaced with a new fuse to restore the circuit.
