A thermocouple is a temperature sensor consisting of two conductors of different metals joined at one end. When there is a temperature difference between the joined junction (hot junction) and the other end (cold or reference junction), an electrical potential (voltage) is generated, which can be measured and converted into a temperature reading. This phenomenon is known as the Seebeck effect.
The operation of a thermocouple is based on the Seebeck effect, discovered by Thomas Seebeck in 1821. When two different metals are joined and exposed to different temperatures at the two junctions, an electromotive force (EMF) is induced, creating a voltage that is proportional to the temperature difference between the junctions.
