A thermocouple operates based on the Seebeck effect, which describes the generation of an electrical voltage (electromotive force - EMF) in a circuit composed of two different metals when there is a temperature difference between the junctions. The measuring junction (hot junction) is exposed to the temperature to be measured, while the reference junction (cold junction) is at a known or controlled temperature. The temperature difference between these two junctions generates a voltage proportional to the temperature difference.
The type K thermocouple is a general-purpose thermocouple and is more resistant to oxidation at high temperatures than types E, J, and T. It has a low cost and, due to its popularity, is available in various mounting types. Long exposure to high temperatures can cause inhomogeneities in the wires.
