A mineral-insulated thermocouple is a type of temperature sensor that consists of a pair of conductive wires made of different metals, joined at a measuring junction and encased in a mineral insulator. These wires are typically made of metals such as chromel and alumel, which are nickel and chromium-aluminum alloys, respectively.
The measuring junction is the point where the two conductive wires meet. When this junction is subjected to a temperature change, an electrical potential difference is generated between the conductive wires. This potential difference is proportional to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and the reference point, usually a reference junction at a known temperature.
The mineral insulator is a high thermal resistance material that surrounds the pair of conductive wires, protecting them from the influence of external temperatures and preventing short circuits. In addition, the mineral insulator helps maintain the stability and accuracy of temperature measurement.
Mineral-insulated thermocouples are widely used in industrial and process applications where it is necessary to measure temperatures in conditions of high temperature, pressure, vibration, or aggressive environments. They offer good dynamic response, high reliability, and resistance to adverse conditions.
Each combination of metals used in the conductive wires of a mineral-insulated thermocouple has a specific temperature range in which it offers a linear and predictable response. There are different types of thermocouples, such as type K (chromel-alumel), type J (iron-constantan), type T (copper-constantan), among others, each with its characteristics and operating temperature ranges.
