A speed sensor is a device used to measure the speed of a moving object, such as a vehicle, engine, gear, or even the flow of fluids in specific systems. It converts movement or rotation into an electrical signal, which can be analyzed and interpreted by control or measurement systems.
How does it work?
The operation of a speed sensor depends on its type and operating principle. The most common sensors use the following methods:
Detects changes in magnetic fields caused by the rotation of an object, such as a disk or gear.
Produces an electrical signal proportional to the speed of movement.
Inductive (magneto-inductive):
Based on electromagnetic induction, generating an electrical signal when a metallic object moves close to the sensor.
Uses infrared light or laser to detect the interruption of a light beam or reflections caused by the movement of an object.
Emits high-frequency sound waves and measures the time they take to return to the sensor, allowing the calculation of the speed of fluids or objects.
GPS (Global Positioning System):
Measures the speed of a moving object based on changes in position over time, using satellites.
The Metrix SV6300 Piezo-Velocity sensor is similar to our SA6200A accelerometer but provides a velocity output instead of acceleration. The solid-state design has no moving parts that can wear out and can be mounted on any axis, unlike many moving-coil devices. It is also less sensitive to cross-axis vibration, which can be particularly detrimental to moving-coil devices.
An integrated amplifier provides a 100mV/in/s constant current output, low impedance, compatible with vibration monitoring systems, electronic switches, and 4-20mA signal conditioners.
The sensor consists of a temperature-stabilized piezoelectric core, amplifier, and integrator, packaged together in a stainless steel housing that is electrically isolated from the sensing circuit. A mounting stud option is available. Refer to product documentation for available hazardous area approvals.
