A thermal relay, also known as a thermal overload relay or thermal protection relay, is a protective device used in electrical systems to monitor and protect electric motors against overload conditions. It is designed to disconnect the motor from the power source when the electrical current passing through it exceeds a certain limit for an extended period, indicating an overload condition.
The basic operation of a thermal relay involves a temperature-sensitive bimetallic element. When the electrical current flowing through the motor increases beyond the preset value, the bimetallic element heats up due to the Joule effect (heating caused by electrical current). As the temperature increases, the bimetallic element deforms, actuating an internal switch that trips the circuit and cuts off the electrical supply to the motor.
