A thermal relay is a protective device against electrical overload in motors and electrical circuits. It automatically shuts off the circuit when it detects abnormal heating caused by excessive current for a certain period.
The thermal relay has a bimetal (two metallic blades with different expansion coefficients) inside. When current flows through the circuit, it generates heat:
If the current is within the limit, the relay remains closed.
If there is an overload (current above the nominal value for a prolonged time), the bimetal heats up, deforms, and actuates a mechanism that disconnects the contactor, thereby shutting down the motor or electrical load.
