An insulation monitoring relay for networks, also known as an insulation monitoring device, is a device used in electrical systems to detect and monitor the integrity of the insulation between electrical conductors, such as wires or cables, in a network.
The main function of an insulation monitoring relay is to ensure that there are no short circuits or insulation failures that could compromise the safety of the electrical system. When the insulation between conductors is damaged, there may be a risk of electric shock, fire, or malfunction of electrical equipment.
The RCX-300 type relay is designed to supervise DC networks isolated from earth contacts.
Operating Principle
The measurement system adopted is the unbalance of a resistance bridge in which two arms are the coupling resistances connected to the two lines of the system (+ and -) and the other two are the insulation resistances of each line to ground.
Any unbalance in the insulation resistance causes a current to flow between earth and the common point of the two coupling resistances. The current signal is converted into a voltage and compared with an externally adjusted reference voltage proportional to the network voltage, according to the chosen sensitivity (sensitivity is the value of the insulation resistance of one line that causes the relay to operate, considering the other line infinite). If the measured value is below the adjusted output level, the output relay contacts will switch and remain in this condition until the system returns to normal (fault extinction).
