An Insulation Monitoring Relay, also known as an Insulation Monitor, is a device used in electrical systems to monitor the integrity of the insulation between conductors and ground. Its main function is to detect possible insulation faults that can occur in electrical equipment, lines, or systems, thus preventing the risks of short circuits, equipment damage, and, most importantly, increasing system safety.
Electrical insulation is essential to ensure that electrical current flows only through the desired paths, preventing short circuits and guaranteeing the safe operation of equipment. An Insulation Monitoring Relay performs periodic or continuous measurements of insulation resistance and compares these values with predefined limits. If the insulation resistance falls below an acceptable level, the relay activates an alarm or takes action to shut down the equipment or isolate the affected part of the system.
The RCX-300 type relay is suitable for supervising isolated DC networks against earth faults.
Operating Principle
The adopted measurement system is based on the imbalance of a resistance bridge where two arms are the coupling resistances connected to the two system lines (+ and -), and the other two are the insulation resistances of each line to ground.
Any imbalance in the insulation resistance causes current to flow between the ground and the common point of the two coupling resistances (point P in Fig. 1). The current signal is converted into a voltage and compared with an externally adjusted reference voltage proportional to the network voltage, according to the chosen sensitivity (sensitivity is the insulation resistance value of one line that triggers the relay's operation, considering the other line to be infinite). If the measured value is below the set output level, the output relay contacts will switch and remain in this condition until the system returns to normal (fault extinction).
