An insulation monitoring relay, also known as an insulation monitor or ground fault monitoring relay, is a device used in electrical systems to monitor the insulation resistance between live conductors (phases) and ground. It is especially important in IT (isolated terra) power systems, where there is no direct connection between the neutral and ground.
This device is essential in applications where continuity of service and safety are priorities, helping to ensure the electrical integrity of the system and the protection of users and equipment.
The MTX-C type relay is suitable for monitoring DC networks.
Operating Principle
The measurement system adopted is the unbalance of a WHEATSTONE bridge where two arms are the coupling resistances connected to two system lines (L1 and L2) and the other two are the insulation resistances of each line to ground.
Any unbalance in the insulation resistance causes a current circulation between ground and the common point of the two coupling resistances. The current signal is converted into a voltage and compared with an internally pre-adjusted reference voltage proportional to the network voltage, according to the selected sensitivity (sensitivity is the insulation resistance value of a line that causes the relay to act, considering the other line infinite). If the measured value is below the adjusted level, the red indicator LED will light up and the output relay will switch its contacts, remaining in this condition until the system returns to normal (fault extinction).
