Digital multifunctional relay for overcurrent protection.
Introduction and application
The MRl3 multifunctional digital relay is a universal time overcurrent and earth fault protection device intended for use in medium voltage systems, either with an isolated/compensated neutral point
or for networks with a solidly earthed/resistance-earthed neutral point.
The MRI3 protection functions that are implemented in just one device are summarized below:
• Definite time (independent) overcurrent relay,
• inverse time overcurrent relay with selectable characteristics,
• integrated fault direction determination for application in double-fed lines or
• two-element earth fault protection (low and high setting) with definite or inverse time
characteristics,
• integrated earth fault direction determination for application in power system networks
with isolated neutral earthing or with arc suppression coil (Peterson coil). (ER/XR relay type),
• integrated determination of earth short-circuit fault direction in systems with solid earthing
neutral point or in resistance-earthed systems (SR relay type).
Additionally, the MRI3 relay can be employed as a backup protection for distance and differential
protection relays.
A similar but simplified version of the IRI1 overcurrent relay with reduced functions, without display and
serial interface, is also available.
Features and characteristics
• Digital filtering of measured values using discrete Fourier analysis to suppress
high-frequency harmonics and DC components induced by faults or system operations,
• two parameter sets,
• selectable protection functions:
- definite time overcurrent relay and
- inverse time overcurrent relay,
• selectable inverse time characteristics according to IEC 255-4:
- Normal Inverse (Type A)
- Very Inverse (Type B)
- Extremely Inverse (Type C)
- Special characteristics,
• reset configuration for selectable inverse time characteristics,
• high-set overcurrent unit with instantaneous or definite time function,
• two-element overcurrent relay (low and high set) for phase and earth faults,
• directional feature for application in double-fed lines or mesh systems,
• selectable earth fault directional feature for isolated or compensated networks,
• sensitive earth fault current measurement with or without directional feature
(X and XR relay type),
• determination of earth short-circuit fault direction for systems with solidly or
resistance-earthed neutral point,
• numerical display of setting values, actual measured values and their active, reactive
components, memorized fault data, etc.,
• display of measurement values as primary quantities,
• extractable modules with automatic short-circuiting of C.T. inputs when modules are
• blocking, e.g., of high-set element (e.g., for selective fault detection through lower
overcurrent protection units after unsuccessful AR),
• relay characteristic angle for selectable phase current directional feature,
• circuit breaker failure protection,
• storage of trip values and switch-off time (tCBFP) for 5 fault occurrences
(voltage fail-safe),
• recording of up to eight fault occurrences with time stamp,
• free assignment of output relays
• indication suppression after an activation (LED flashes),
• display of date and time
