The 1771 adapter module can be used with any 1771 I/O rack. Communication between the discrete analog module and the processor is bidirectional; the processor transfers block output data via the output image table to the module, and transfers block input data from the module via the input image table. The module also requires an area in the data table to store read block transfer data and write block transfer data. The use of the I/O image table is an important factor in module placement and addressing selection.

The Allen-Bradley 1771-AL is an I/O adapter module that interfaces with the local PLC-2 system. The 1771-AL can be mounted on the 4-slot, 8-slot, 12-slot, or 16-slot I/O chassis. With the 1771-AL, two modules close to each other are considered a single group and are addressed using 2-slot 1771 I/O addressing as a single entity. The module has an operating temperature range between 0 and 60 degrees Celsius and a storage temperature range between -40 and +85 degrees Celsius. The 1771-AL draws a backplane current of 700 mA at 5 V and its heat dissipation rate is 5 V. When mounting the 1771-AL in the 1771 I/O chassis, the leftmost slot must be used.

Parallel communication is also possible with the 1771-AL I/O adapter module. For fault localization and operational maintenance, the 1771-AL has status indicators (rack fault and active indicators). These indicators are located on the module face. For backplane connection, the module has a backplane connector located at the rear end and 2 additional connectors on the front of the 1771-AL. One of the front backplane connectors is located at the top of the device and the other at the bottom.

The top connector handles connections to the I/O chassis and processor when it is close to the processor. The bottom chassis connector handles connections to the I/O chassis when the processor or I/O termination plug are distant. The 1771-AL module must be used in an industrial environment with a non-condensing humidity level between 5 and 95%. The 1771-AL allows system configuration through the interface of PLC-2 series processors with I/O modules.
