A motor starter protector is a protective device used to protect electric motors against overloads, short circuits, and phase failures. It combines the functions of a conventional circuit breaker with those of a thermal relay, providing comprehensive protection for electric motors.
When an electric motor is switched on, it can face various adverse conditions, such as overload or short circuit. The motor starter protector continuously monitors the current flowing through the motor. If the current exceeds a safe value for a specific period of time (indicating an overload), the thermal relay trips the circuit, cutting off power to the motor. In the event of a short circuit, the magnetic protection of the circuit breaker acts immediately, interrupting the current almost instantly to prevent damage to the motor and the circuit.
