Signal Conditioning Box with display
(ATI) offers the PICOTURN 2G rotational speed sensor for turbochargers. Compared with optical
or magnetic detection systems, the PICOTURN system is proven as a robust, reliable, simple, accurate, and cost-effective
solution. The functional principle of the system is a 1 MHz pulse induction with eddy current discrimination, using a compressor
mounted solenoid sensor which detects and counts the compressor blades individually, generating a standard TTL/CMOS output
signal. Maximum wheel speed measurement is 400,000 rpm, with a minimum operating speed of 390 rpm.
The open system architecture and modular system design allow for easy integration into existing measurement
systems as a standalone solution or optionally with the PT2G-BD or PT2G-BX signal conditioning boxes. The preferred
turbocharger wheel material is aluminum; titanium wheels require individual testing to verify compatibility with the
PICOTURN Sensor.
The PICOTURN system benefits from high sensitivity, allowing for a large distance between the sensor and rotating blades in the
range of 1 to 0.6 mm blade thickness. Various sensors are available to accommodate several differentiated user cases
by sensor head length and thread. The PTSM-H series benefits from improved sensitivity, allowing for use with
titanium wheels and other critical applications where higher temperatures are a priority. The second-generation PICOTURN
detection system - the PT2G - is summarized on the following two pages.
